There's nothing like good reading material on a rainy day. That's really the only reason I was online and happened upon your article. I agree with you on many levels.

Thank you very much for your very personal real estate insight into this tempting, but complex and beautiful country. As a RE agent who is investigating Panama as a place to live and/or own property, your article is wonderfully educational. Your cautions will be respected.

Best wishes for good health & success during this challenging world economy.

Well, you said a lot of things that ring true. I've had many people show me rivers that don't really touch the property that I'm being shown, or at least not as much as they say. In Puerto Armuelles we had a licensed real estate agent who told us not to ever show our white faces to keep the seller from raising the price while she raised the price as much as 100 %.Another broker gave some of the money to a guy who lived near there but didn't have anything to do with ownership and split the rest of the money with my lawyers. As it turned out there was a lien on the property which I paid, now I am the owner by default, lets see if I get title.I had to write after reading your story because there were so many similarities in our experiences.I came down five years ago after spending thirty years as a commercial fisherman on Cape Cod, I also had a snow removal company in Vail, where I learned most of what I know about real estate. Anyway, I love this country, live here, and I think I'm going to succeed here and I've developed a much more sceptical attitude about everything I see or hear. I get to the city occasionaly, but I'm mostly a country boy out here in Chiriqui and Veraguas, but I look forward to meeting you sometime. Harry Hunt

I am a DoDDS teacher who lived in Panama with my family from 1984-88. Since then we have lived in Japan and Germany. We are presently looking for a retirement home and prefer not to live in the US or at least not full time. We have wanted to return to Panama for a visit to see our old "haunts" and see how it has changed. However, after reading your article it has all come back of why we left in the first place. It hasn't changed! After living in the country of supreme effeciency we don't know if we could go back to the land of no time concept, shoddy workmanship, sleazy deals - this drove my husband crazy. But we do have many great memories and friends still there. We actually contacted one of the "big boys" regarding investment in a beach home. However, I regard your honesty in presenting the true side of Panama and would like to remain in contact with you.

Sincerely,
Donna and Randy Barlow
