Cable Onda Update

Apparently, in my phoning Cable Onda, a note was made that I wanted to make revisions to my service plan. I was contacted by a service rep over the phone, and told him what plans I wanted. He, in his roundabout way, didn’t actually give me the information that I needed!

Thankfully, though, I have the plans in hand from Yolanda, and have been able to figure out exactly what I need. So, the next time the service rep called I told him what was what, and he said they would make an appointment to come out and get my service all changed around. The appointment is set for March 3rd… I will let you know what happens then. Read more

Travel Deals for Panama

Within our network of traveling gringos we like to share good ideas and travel deals. Recently The Costa Rica Gringo wrote about travel deals auctioned off through a web-site called Luxury Link.

His post received so much traffic and positive feedback that I decided to see if the same thing would happen for Panama travel deals.

Luxury Link is an auction site for travel deals. The way it works is you search for your travel destination of choice, and then you can bid on different vacation packages, or in some cases you can select the buy-it-now price and purchase the package immediately. It feels kind of like eBay, but for vacationers.

Admittedly the Costa Rica auction pages Read more

Panama City Airport – First Class Airport with many airlines, great stores and airline clubs

Now that the secret is out, the flights are usually quite full from the USA. Flights originate out of Orlando, Houston, Miami, Newark, Los Angeles and Atlanta. Expect to pay between $400 to $600 for coach. The Panama Gringo used to fly American Airlines through Miami but recently switched to Continental Airlines through Houston. Houston is leagues better than Miami – customs is more pleasant (although our customs people have a very very tough job every day) and the airport has everything you could need.

Here are some secrets to visiting Panama:

1. GET A PANAMA PHONE As far as I know – only Cingular works there except if you have a chip for Verizon but it Read more

Cable Onda is Driving Me Crazy!

I opened up my January bill for my telephone, internet and TV service from Cable Onda in Panama City to find that the price was nearly a third higher than it had been the previous months. For some reason, I was charged an additional fee, and on top of that, the cost of my Internet service had gone up.

Needless to say, I was a little miffed, so I called up Cable Onda to see what the deal was. After waiting for 15 minutes for an English speaking operator I finally gave up and went with the Spanish. My call was answered somewhat promptly (only 2 minutes on hold). As the operator asked how she could be of Read more

How far is it…? Panama Distance Calculator

Globefeed.com offers a distance calculator that can be quite helpful when trying to plan a trip through Panama.

You enter the name of the City, Village, Town or Airport you are traveling to, and the one you are traveling from and then press the search button. If there are multiple destinations with the same name you will be asked to select which city you are traveling from. Then, you click calculate distance.

The distance will be given to you in kilometers, miles, and nautical miles, and will tell you an approximated direct distance, as if traveling in a straight line. The actual distance when traveling by roadway may be greater, but at least you have an Read more

HANDYMAN COMPANY IN PANAMA

I know how hard it is for expats to find good handyman services in Panama, so I wanted to pass along this information posted in Panama Small Business Development on Yahoo Groups by Steven Rich. I agree completely with what he says. The search is over– these guys are just what you need to get your repairs, remodeling, installation and more done in Panama.

“I often get requests for a handyman to make repairs, do remodeling, installation, decorations, and other small jobs that every house or apartment owner needs. Expats find it difficult to locate reliable, reasonably priced, competent handymen in Panama who will show up as scheduled. English speaking handymen is another problem finding in Panama.

Domestic Airfare in Panama Increases

This past weekend saw the mark of price increases for some domestic flights in Panama.

Starting on Saturday January 31st, 2009, flights from Panama City to Bocas del Toro, Changuinola and David will cost to $80, a $10 increase over the previous $70 tickets.

Although it doesn’t seem like much in actuality it is a 14.3% increase.

Other flights that are increasing in price are flights to Kuna Yala (an increase of $5), flights to Darién ($3.50) and flights to Colón and Isla Contadora (a $3 increase each).

Many people are puzzled as to why prices are rising at a time when fuel prices are dropping. Panama’s Civil Aviation Authority explained that despite the drop in fuel costs, they have still Read more
