Ego and Narciso Restaurant in Casa Viejo

The revitalization of Casa Viejo in Panama is well underway.  Had an opportunity to head there last night to sample the culinary selections in the eclectic foodery named Ego and Narciso.

Interesting and robust menu -although priced reasonably by US standards – you will find this on upper end of Panama restaurants.

Quality was superb although I do recommend that you choose to sit outside – the service seemed much better there.  We sat inside and waited for every course.  Could have just been a one time issue and this place is worth trying out regardless.

November in Panama = Rain, Rain, Rain

November is the height of the rainy season and 2009 is proof positive of that fact.  It has rained very hard every day for at least two hours every single day for the past several weeks.

The key tip for Gringos is to watch the sky – cabs get nearly impossible to find once the rain starts.

Palador – Upscale dining at Multi Plaza Mall

Paladar Restaurant, located in Multi Plaza Mall between San Francisco and Punta Pacifica section of Panama City is a great place to meet some friends for dinner.  Great wine selection, excellent herb infused chicken kebab and other specialties make this worth the trip.  More information  here: Paladar “Una cocina diferente”

A couple of tips for my fellow Gringos – service is either good or horrendous here.  Have found it to be be at its’ worst during busy times like Sunday and Weekend nights.  It will get annoying for the usually impatient Gringos like myself…. that said – the food is still worth it.

If you like Spaghetti Bolegnese – order it here.

New Wine Bar on Amador Causeway continues the excellent tradition

Map of the Calzada de Amador (Causeway) Panama with the Wine Bar location
Within the last year, the Wine Bar (originally found by the Veneto hotel) has opened a second location on the Causeway.  As Panama  Gringo readers know – the Wine Bar is a Gringo favorite.  On my recent trip to Panama City, I ventured out to the new location on the Causeway – and was surprised by a more spacious version of the Wine bar I have come to enjoy.  Service was excellent. Gorganzola brushetta was phenomenal.  They continue to do it right, pay attention and deserve your patronage.

The Market – worth your time and dinner dollars

The Market (Steak House and Wine Bar) is owned by the same owner of the consistently great La Posta restaurant a few streets away.

The market focuses on a slightly simpler fare (see menu) but the Gringo can tell you from personal experience – the Hamburgs are supremo.

You wont be disappointed.  Contact information here.

Boquete is challenged by rains

Weather By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com – Received this morning via email: “I live at the foot of Jaramillo Arriba in Boquete. My two adjacent houses were both flooded by the Quebrada overflowing its banks. The Quebrada in this area goes through lots of culverts and these get plugged by fallen tree branches, etc. Anyway, the houses are full of mud and the yards are partially destroyed. The only good thing was that the electricity was only off for a few hours. I have a very good friend whose Read more

US seaports brace for expanded Panama Canal

Considered to be one of the most important…and game changing…public works projects of the century, completion of a third set of Panama Canal ship locks in 2014 will provide many of the world’s largest vessels a crucial “intercontinental shortcut” to lucrative markets. To examine the potential impacts of this project and other major trade pattern developments-and the ripple effects on everything from dredging, port competition, vessel transloading and short-sea shipping-the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), U.S. Maritime Administration and Tampa Port Authority are partnering for the third consecutive year to offer their Shifting International Trade Routes conference in Tampa, Fla., Jan. 26-27, 2010.
