Many who decide on retirement in Panama do so without first spending a great deal of time in the country. This often leads to unrealistic expectations and sometimes disappointment. Living in any country is truly what you make of the experience; however, retiring in Panama can provide an uncomplicated, inexpensive and tranquil lifestyle if you do your homework first. 
The cost and pace of living in Panama City is comparable to many cities in the United States. For this reason many retirees choose to venture out into the interior and to towns such as Pedasi, David, Boquete and Bocas Del Toro. These cities host the advantages of less traffic, cheaper rent and utilities (average rent in Boquete is $350-$550/month), fresher and more affordable produce, and a calmer small town feel. Pedasi has only recently gained popularity as a major surf and fishing spot for travelers from all over the world. If you prefer mountain views the town of Boquete offer picturesque landscapes, crisp mountain air, and extreme affordability.
While some may prefer the faster paced and more Americanized conveniences of living in Panama City, those looking for a more relaxing environment should know that panama retirement offers a variety of living styles and locales for every spirit. If you are looking for five star restaurants, glaring casinos, and a assortment of nightclubs at your disposal then Panama City may be the perfect place for you to retire. But, if you want to seriously unwind, enjoy a quiet stroll on the beach or down a mountainside, eat at local mom and pop joints, and really get to know the people living around you then panama has a surplus of small cities and towns to consider. My advice is to first spend a few days or weeks in various areas. Travel to Bocas Del Toro for a laid back Caribbean experience. Stay in the city for shopping, cuisine and a lively party scene. Visit the mountains in Chiriquí province for a mild and relaxing retreat with spectacular views (not that you can’t get the views anywhere in this country). Anywhere you go is guaranteed amazing weather and a lower cost of living than in the U.S. It is up to the individual to choose the style of panama retirement best for them. Yes, Panama has been the location of choice for a lot of baby boomers checking out Central America. Its also one of the most economically stable countries in the area, certainly far more so than the developed world!

I am visiting Panama in March and wanted to see where you would suggest going to see for possible retirement locations. We want to be in a town of 15,000 or more population, restaurants, some expats but also locals and on or overlooking the beach. We are both active and want a “fun” community. Not sure what else I could add but thanks for your help.
