Delicatessen and Gourmet Groceries in Casco Antiguo

Shopping for high quality groceries and special products can be a little difficult in Panama City, which is why Super Gourmet first opened in Bocas del Toro in 2007. Now, after enjoying seven years of success providing the best in deli products and other hard to find products, Super Gourmet has opened up a second location in Casco Antiguo.

At Super Gourmet you can find gourmet products that are hard to find elsewhere such as imported cheeses and beers, fine wines and high quality cigars. Super Gourmet is located in Casco Antiguo behind the Canal Museum. The original Super Gourmet in Bocas del Toro is found on Main Street.

Dine in a Dungeon – Las Bovedas, Casco Viejo

On my last trip to Panama I decided to head to Las Bovedas, a restaurant that I had been hearing about for quite some time, as it is considered to be one of the landmark restaurants in Casco Viejo. Las Bovedas fits right into the ambiance of Casco Viejo, Panama City’s traditional sector of pastel homes and jazz clubs.

The restaurant is built into a seawall that used to serve as a dungeon, although the narrow walls and curved vaulted ceilings, and the low intimate lighting, and warmly finished wood surfaces combine to make it feel more like a castle.

The menu is written on an oversized chalk board, and not all items are listed, so Read more

Sizzling Steak Served up in Casco Viejo

Something about us Gringos… or maybe all men really, is the majority of us from time to time crave a good chunk of meat. You know what I’m talking about; it ain’t no grilled chicken. No sir, I mean beef and I have found it at Café Casuale in Casco Viejo.

The menu is varied, but a fair amount of it is dedicated to high quality beef. At the recommendation of a friend I ordered the Cowboy Prime Rib, which is the joint’s most popular dish, with good reason. Despite being a bit pricey ($42), the cut is downright impressive. It is enormous and full of flavor and texture, very tender.

Nothin' like a bagel n' cream cheese

Looking for your morning bagel with cream cheese and a large coffee, served up North American style? Try New York Bagel Café in El Cangrejo, Panama City. This little coffee shop is pretty trendy; leather couches, tableside books, abstract paintings complete the laid-back environment. The owner, John, is a former member of the Peace Corps who put down roots in Panama.

The 20 different types of bagels include “Strawberry Fields”, “Frisco Sourdough”, and “Jumpin’ Jalapeno”. “Sundried Tomato Basil” cream cheese is just one of the 12 flavors you can choose from to top your bagel. He also makes 18 different types of sandwiches. To drink there are a number of flavored coffees, Italian sodas and juices. You can Read more

The Fiesta Starts Here!

El Fiesta Casino located behind Hotel El Panama is a great place to pass the evening. It has 561 different gaming machines and 20 table and poker games, including Blackjack, Poker, Roulette and Baccarat. Twelve machines are set aside for Sigma Derby Slots, which are pretty fun. When you first walk in, the place doesn’t seem that big, but it is actually spread out over 20,000 square feet.

The bar has a good variety of drinks, and is relatively inexpensive, especially for a larger casino bar. Throughout the place there are TVs for those who prefer to kick back and enjoy a drink in front of the big screen. There Read more

Fruit Drinks Stand in Panama City

The next time you are in Panama City, treat yourself to the wonderful juice and frozen juice based drinks at one of the local stands in the City.
They are usually drive through window-based and the fruits are just INCREDIBLE.

The Panama Gringo was feeling a little too tired when he sampled a frozen fruit punch on his last trip from a little too many carnivale activities the night before to get an actual address – just ask any cabbie – they will know.
